In January and February 2026, we urged the city to take a stand against ICE. One of our organizers spoke during public comment twice, and several book club members wrote to their councilors.
On February 9, 2026, the city posted on their Facebook page, providing images of newly signed documents about immigration and the city's values. We've converted the city's original images to PDFs and provided them here:
(Signed by the Mayor, City Council President, and School Committee President. City Council President Julie Flowers later posted on Facebook that all City Councilors and all School Commitee Members have also signed on.)
Starting in November 2025, we use the pubic comment period of City Council meetings to read a land acknowledgment to honor the Indigenous Peoples of this area. We'll do this until City Councilors vote to include it in normal proceedings (this failed to pass in 2022).
What exactly is a land acknowledgment and why is it important? Learn more here.
This meeting takes place on the unceded ancestral lands of the Naumkeag and Pawtucket bands of the Massachusett Tribe, from whom the Commonwealth of Massachusetts took its name.
With deep respect and gratitude, we acknowledge the Indigenous caretakers of these lands and waters who have lived here for thousands of years—and who live here in diverse Indigenous communities today.
